Casta: the origins of caste

It’s always satisfying to complete a piece of work. This has been particularly the case with Opal 22’s Casta: the origins of caste evaluation.

For Tara Munroe, the exhibition last autumn at the Leicester Museum was the culmination of over a decade’s work to persuade colleagues and partners to recognise the historical, cultural and social importance of the paintings.

It was a pleasure to talk to museums professionals, to local authority colleagues and to leading art historians about the significance of the paintings. Now that they’ve been conserved, I do hope that there will be plenty of opportunities to see them exhibited in future.
